Exotic Bonsai Trees

Most bonsai’s are a deciduous or coniferous species but they are many exotic bonsai’s for the experienced bonsai artist to try his hand at.

One of these exotic bonsai’s is the aromatic Wisteria. These can reach 30 feet in the wild and are native to Japan and China. They have flowers and a large range of colors white, blues purples pinks and they offer a challenge in forming them into a bonsai since they don’t conform to typical style. Wisteria can grow in full sun or partial shade in the lot of water in the spring when they are blooming but be sure there is adequate drainage. They should be fertilized right before they flower and also in late summer.

Orange Jasmine is another aromatic flowering plant that can stretch the imagination of the bonsai artist. These plants are probably best raised inside and will delight everyone with their bright red fruits and white flowers. They should be fertilized once a month and require light watering. Keep in filtered sun or partial shade.

If you’re looking for a larger bonsai, the Mimosa with its long silky filaments could be a good choice. Filled with puffy flowers and lacy foliage this plant smells just as good as it looks. Blooming from April to July it should be watered moderately but be careful not to wet the flowers as it will cause them to wilt.

Another colorful plant for the bonsai collected to try his hand at is the Desert Rose. This plant from East Africa can grow up to 10 feet and has large pink flowers. You want to keep this in a pot as it is very sensitive to cold but needs full sun so should be kept outside in the summer and brought in during the cool weather. Once gets below 60 they will become dormant.

These plants can make a wonderful addition to bonsai garden and add color to your usual evergreens. Designing them can be a challenge and will stretch your artistic creativity.
